Search the net and locate the bmw tis unofficial websites and you will find specific factory instruction.
There are 2 screws in the roof frame for this purpose.
Once you push the roof up slightly it should trigger a microswitch that allows the motor to turn on.
Turn the key forward to the spot just before cranking emergency break on windows down slightly or all the way no difference foot on break roof unlatched and pushed back slightly.
The otg display has probably got a flexible printed circuit that is glued onto the main board these decay with age and contact is lost don t think contact cleaner will fix this.
This will apply to the z3 and 3 series convertible soft tops and can apply.
Over time the rubber seals shrunk the tolerance changed and needed adjustment thats all.
The switch can now be put back into the housing with the wires connected and can now be tested to make sure it works the roof should go up and down with the lever in its normal position and should not go up and down if the lever is depressed so that the switch clicks and closes the circuit as if the roof was closed.
If the switch is properly set then other things are causing the problem.

You need to realign the roof to make the fit a little tighter.

The switch should be set to automatic not manual.
It is possible to disconnect the connector and short the two pins together that the microswitch connects to in order to test this.
